You start by typing a natural language description of what you want—like 'a to-do list app with user authentication and a database'—and it generates the entire stack: frontend, backend, and database schema, often using React, Node.js, and a choice of databases like PostgreSQL or SQLite. The generated code is surprisingly clean and well-structured, though not perfect. I've found it excellent for MVPs, internal tools, and learning how different parts of a web app fit together. However, it struggles with highly complex logic, niche integrations, or very specific design requirements. The pricing is freemium: the free tier gives you limited 'tokens' (essentially compute credits) and restricts you to smaller projects. For serious use, the paid plans are necessary, starting at $20/month for more tokens and larger apps. A major limitation is that you can't easily export the full codebase to run locally—you're somewhat locked into their environment, though you can export individual files. Also, debugging can be tricky because you're debugging the generated code, not code you wrote yourself. Customer support is responsive but basic. Overall, Bolt.new is a powerful tool for non-developers and a productivity booster for developers, but it's not a magic bullet for complex enterprise applications.
